Black San-gan leather is a type of cowhide that was traditionally used for the armor of high-ranking samurai. Today, it is used for kendo protective gear. Currently, it is only made by Sakamoto Shoten in Himeji, and because it is made by repeatedly applying layers of lacquer, only about 20 sheets can be produced per month, making it a very rare material.
The leather is made from domestically sourced Wagyu cattle that have been white-tanned, and then a pattern is embossed into it. The lacquer is then repeatedly applied by hand. Unlike mass production, Sakamoto Shoten handles everything from tanning to processing in-house. The multiple layers of lacquer create a beautiful shine and volume, resembling scattered tiny diamonds, which is why it's called "Black Diamond Leather".
Furthermore, Kurozan Leather won the first-ever Japanese award at an overseas materials exhibition, and is in high demand from high-end brands around the world, making it truly samurai leather with a very high international reputation.

COTOCUL is a coined word combining "Koto" (ancient capital) and "culture," reflecting our desire to promote Kyoto's culture and the best of Japan through manufacturing. We value the Japanese mindset and character in approaching manufacturing.
Each product is handcrafted with care by artisans in a workshop in Kyoto.
We also offer repairs in-house. Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions or concerns.
We have staff members with Leather Sommelier certification permanently stationed in our workshop.
