Kurozan leather is cowhide that was historically used for armor by generals and is now used for kendo protective gear. Currently, it is only made at Sakamoto Shoten in Himeji, and because it involves repeatedly applying layers of lacquer, only about 20 sheets can be produced per month, making it an extremely rare material.
Domestic Japanese Black cattle hide, tanned white, is textured, and lacquer is repeatedly applied by hand. Instead of a divided process, Sakamoto Shoten handles everything from tanning to finishing. The multi-layered application creates a glossy and voluminous lacquer finish, so beautiful it's like scattered tiny diamonds, earning it the nickname "Black Diamond of Leather."
Furthermore, Kurozan leather received Japan's first award at an overseas material exhibition, and requests are flooding in from high-end brands worldwide. It is highly praised overseas, truly "Samurai Leather."

COTOCUL is a coined word combining "Koto" (ancient capital) and "Culture," expressing our desire to disseminate Kyoto's culture and the excellence of Japan through craftsmanship. We value the Japanese attitude and temperament towards craftsmanship.
Each product is handcrafted with care by artisans at our Kyoto workshop.
We also accept repairs in-house. Please feel free to contact us with any questions.
Staff with Leather Sommelier qualifications are permanently stationed at the workshop.
