Kurozan leather has been used for the armor of generals since ancient times, and is now used for kendo armor. Currently, it is only made by Sakamoto Shoten in Himeji, and because it is made by applying multiple layers of lacquer, it is an extremely rare material, with only about 20 pieces produced per month.
White-tanned Japanese black cattle are given a rough texture and then lacquer is applied by hand over and over again. Rather than dividing the work into separate tasks, Sakamoto Shoten produces the entire process from tanning to processing. The multiple layers of lacquer create a glossy finish and volume, making the leather look as beautiful as if it were dotted with tiny diamonds, hence the name "black diamond leather."
In addition, Kurosan leather won the first award in Japan at an overseas material exhibition, and has been inundated with requests from high-end brands around the world. It is truly samurai leather, highly acclaimed overseas.
