Black lacquered leather (Kuro Sanbekawa) was traditionally used for the armor of high-ranking samurai, and is now used for the protective gear in Kendo (Japanese fencing). Currently, it is only made by Sakamoto Shoten in Himeji, and because it is made by applying layers of lacquer multiple times, only about 20 pieces are produced per month, making it a very rare material.
It can be used as a set with a mini wallet.
MATERIAL
The process begins with domestically sourced Wagyu beef, which is white-tanned and then embossed with a textured pattern. The lacquer is then repeatedly applied by hand. Unlike mass production, Sakamoto Shoten handles everything from tanning to processing in-house. The multiple layers of lacquer create a lustrous volume, resulting in a beauty reminiscent of scattered tiny diamonds, hence the name "Black Diamond of Leather."
Furthermore, Kurozan Leather (black lacquered leather) won the first Japanese award at an overseas materials exhibition, and is in high demand from high-end brands all over the world, making it truly samurai leather with a very high international reputation.
